The concepts behind the wallpiece series are the various levels and ways of presenting woven structures. This work actually started as woven jewelry which I photographed. Then, I etched the photo into the copper plate. The copper plate was used in the printing process to make intaglio monoprints. This is the only printmaking that I am aware of that includes the actual printing plate as a part of the piece. After I finished the printmaking process, I used patina, gold leaf and ink to incorporate the copper plate into the work. Also, a wire mesh of sterling silver was woven, using an open-weave technique. Because they are set away from the paper, the shadow it casts becomes an important part of the piece. In a way, it's like a woven shadow. Also, I rubbed ink onto the woven mesh, and printed that image. Overall, the series "Plait Over Plate" is a play on concepts. For example, the use of photographs of the jewelry pieces combines the past and the present. It is also the 2D image of the original 3D image. The woven structure was also embossed into the paper, causing a "merging" of the 3D with the 2D. In addition, the shadow changes with the lighting, giving the owner a chance to participate in the design. Gold and silver leaf add a gestural quality, and a reflectivity that is "married" to the surface.
